CAREER DIRECTION

Choose the work before the work location.

Remote is a working arrangement. It is not a career path—and it does not tell you whether a role fits.

Separate three decisions

First, choose the function: projects, operations, clinical implementation, or another clearly defined area. Second, assess the level of ownership the role requires. Third, evaluate the working arrangement, including location restrictions, hours, travel, and on-site expectations.

Read beyond the title

A coordinator position can require several years of specialized experience. A remote implementation role can require extensive travel. A clinical operations role can mean different things at a hospital, health plan, or software company. The actual duties and minimum qualifications matter more than the label.

Use your constraints constructively

Write down what you need from a role, what you would prefer, and what you could adjust. Include schedule, travel, geography, compensation, and the type of work you enjoy. This helps you focus without treating every preferred combination as readily available.

Try this

Compare three postings in one role family. Highlight repeated responsibilities. Which can you support with real examples? Which would require new experience? Use the answers to decide whether this is a realistic first target or a longer-term direction.
